Koffee Krew Unite with Sam

Renee Serrano

Welcome to Luckee's podcast, so introduce yourself and then tell me what school you're from. Yes. Sam Meeker, been training for three years. Those three years we're at, Battle Control jiu jitsu. I just actually recently started a new school. I started this week with Heroes. Oh, nice. Yeah. Hopefully, that goes good. It's a better scheduling for me. Okay. They have four gyms, every one of'em is like maybe 15 minutes or so from the house. More convenience. Yeah. Yeah. What brought you to the coffee crew today? Well, today, because it's such a big event, right? I try to go as many Sundays as I can. And today's kinda like bringing the whole Bay Area together. I thought that was kind of cool. So. It was. There's a lot of people out there and, but I don't think anybody got hurt. There was a lot of high fiving, a lot of smiling, and people just, enjoying themselves. That was cool. Kiko and his group did a really good job in putting this all together. It was awesome. Yeah. Yeah. I told him, I said, man, great job. You know, a lot of hard work and maybe, it's gonna be an annual thing. Then maybe next year it'll be a bigger spot. You know what I mean? You never know. Right? I think it's gonna have to be a bigger spot. I was in there trying to take photos and it was pretty jam packed in there. Yeah. And with all those people, I was like, I had a little A DHD, I was like, oh shoot. I seen you dodging and weaving and you weren't like laying down, taking your shots like normal either. And those are the best shots, the ones that are way on the ground. So it's not enough space. Yeah, no space. Let me ask you a couple of questions in regards to jiu jitsu. Go ahead. What was your biggest mental hurdle as a white belt? Breathing. And as a blue belt. I was still breathing. I just, I'm horrible at it. I don't know, man. I had asthma growing up as a kid, really bad. And I still have asthma. You never really get rid of it. I haven't had any attacks, but I find it really hard, like just to breathe. It's not just somebody choking me out. But I'm trying to control it. Yeah. Yeah. You know what would help is doing a little cardio. I was thinking maybe swimming because Oh, that would be good too. Maybe swimming might do it to. Yeah. Yeah. Any type of cardio I think would help you out. Okay. So, if you had to describe your jiu jitsu style in three words, what would that be? Actually, three. Words. Yeah. Um, not too fast. There we go. I do, a lot of gi and then the nogi is a little bit too fast for me. I really don't have anything to grip on and hold, but, yeah. So three words, not too fast. Okay. Sounds good. What first drew you to jiu jitsu? Alright, this is good. So my daughter Zoe, so she was doing jiu jitsu. And I would go every class to drop her off, but I would hang out for the two hours and just watch and Right. I did that for probably, maybe a couple years. Just watching her and then, in my mind I'm thinking like, ah, these kids aren't listening, you know? Right. You know, ah, you gotta do this and do that. And then I started picturing myself doing it in my head. And then I just talked to the coach and I said, Hey, I don't wanna take anything away from her training, but I would like to maybe try it out myself. And then once you do it, you do kind of get hooked on it. It's like, it's fun. Yeah. It's a lot of fun learning something new. But that's what got me into it. Okay. What was your biggest challenge in jiu jitsu? Biggest challenge. It's probably my weight, I'm a bigger guy. Yeah. And, when I first started out, it was like a shock to my system. I lost a lot of weight. I have put a lot back. I've put maybe, 30 pounds back on, that weight that I lost. Right. And, that was like the biggest challenge, just being a larger dude. But even here, there's a lot of larger guys. Yeah. And, everyone's real cool. I don't see anybody like, getting crazy out there. They don't. It's all about skill and technique, right? It's afterwards just slapping hands and saying, Hey, great job. That's cool. Who else did you, do your jiu jitsu under? Greg Laura. Battle Control. Who's the sensei at the new school that you go to? Well, you know what, there's four different gyms, I just tried the downtown one. The coach was, Trevor and then I tried the east side one, this week. Uh, Nick Is his name. I'm still kind of learning. They had such a big schedule, so I'm trying to just figure out what schedule where I can maybe work, three nights a week and then do the open mat on Sundays. Okay. So right on. I just haven't figured it out yet. Okay, cool. Sam, well thank you for being here. Well, thank you. Luckee. I appreciate it. You're welcome. I really enjoy the podcast. I think you're doing a great job. It's just good to talk about jiu jitsu and people having fun, and that's awesome. Okay, thank you, Sam. Thank you. Take care. Bye-bye. Bye.
