Renee Serrano

Welcome to the podcast. I'm glad to be here. Thank you. Yeah. All right. I'm glad to be here. Thanks. Introduce yourself and, tell us how you got started in jiu jitsu. My name is Mark. I started jiu jitsu in 2012. I wrestled in high school. That's how I got into grappling. My brother was my wrestling partner during that time, and a bunch of his friends, which is Josh's cousins. Right on. Josh, tell us how you got started into jiu jitsu. Well, I was into, mixed martial arts. So from, 1999 to about the end of 2007, I was doing MMA. And then, in the end of 2007 is, when I started doing, jiu jitsu. So what, gravitated you towards the jiu jitsu? I wanted to do something, after my MMA. I wanted to do something that's similar and I thought that, jiu jitsu, was pretty close to what I was doing. With, you know, minus getting hit and stuff. Yeah. I'm Derek. I started jiu jitsu, around 2014. Been kind of off and on over the years, but, I got started because, I got bored with my traditional just gym and I played a lot of basketball growing up, so I wanted to get into something new. And fortunately, I knew Josh way before I started training, so he's been asking me for years to give it a try. And I finally did, one time and got hooked ever since. I just loved how, there's so much thought involved and it forced your body to do stuff that it wasn't used to. And just trying to figure out how, like I'm getting swept, getting tap, things like that. I just got me really addicted, so I got hooked that way and it was like something completely new for me. How do you adapt your game for different body types and athletic levels? When I competed very young, I was like at 135s and throughout for years, I went up weight, I went to 1, 3 5, 1 45 65, and I went to one 70. So I kind of knew what to expect from the lighter guys and I knew what to expect from the heavier guys. But a lot has to do with our coaches, which is like Vargas, Josh, Wayne, a lot of those guys that play very top heavy. So I developed a lot from them being able to trim back and get back to guard and, defend where I needed to defend. So a lot of it has to do with our team. How about you, Josh? When I'm rolling with, whoever it is, I like to, feel out their pace and feel out their movements. And then from there as we're rolling, I kind of dictate what I want to do. I feel like as long as I'm able to do what I'm doing, then then it's good. You know what I mean? Right. I think they're gonna be in the defense most of the time because I'm just doing what I want to do. You try to stay ahead of them. Yeah. Try to stay ahead, do your game, play your game pretty much. Alright. How about you Derek? Yeah. Kind of along the lines of what Josh said, I try to match energy. I don't consider myself like the fastest or most strong, most athletic, so depending like how their pace is with me is kind of how I dictate that. So I'm not gonna try to gas myself being faster or try to, tire myself being stronger. It's just whatever they give me, I give that same energy back. So, make sure I explode at the right times, make sure I'm fast and, slow down at the right times. It's all timing with me. Okay. From when you were younger to now, how do you train smart as you get older? You want answer this one Mark? Yeah. You know, honestly, I think it's just knowing your partners, being honest with other people that you roll with. Like everyone says it's not ADCC, we are here to learn, right? We are here to make sure everyone's safe because we still want people to come in, feeling that they're capable. A higher belt like we are, we do have a responsibility towards our safety. Yeah. How about you, Josh? Okay. Um, can you repeat the question? Okay. How do you train smart as you get older? Definitely I try to slow down my game and, be more defensive if they're more, athletic because then I feel like, they can be athletic as they want, and now I get to learn my defenses, For me it's just, if they're fast, if they're stronger, then I get to work on other things. And then if they're slower than me, then I get to work on, more technique and really just, timing is what I'm focused on. Yeah. Not so much of trying to match their, like speed or energy. I'm just build walls, work my timing.'cause I feel like the higher levels you are, it's gonna come down to timing. How about you Derek? Yeah, I like to, go on my own pace too, I know, Josh mentioned about like more athletic, more strong guys. But, I just try to find openings. I don't try to force them or try to beat them to a certain position. Well, I do, but not in the way that you would think. It's just if it's open, I'll work my way there.'Cause there's always someone faster, there's always someone stronger. So you just have to be mindful of that. But also, taking time to recover properly. You know, getting enough sleep, stretching, getting massages. Yeah, for sure. Like it really adds up as you get older. So I'm only 38 and I feel it already. So like it only gets harder as get older. Yeah, I agree. Okay guys, that's it for right now and um, I look forward to having you guys on my podcast one of these days. Each one of you individually, okay? Yeah, yeah. All. Okay, take care guys. Giving away us. You gave away our secrets though. What? No, no, no. No secrets. No secrets. My biggest secret. If you wanna be good at jiu jitsu Burger King. Yo. Burger King, yo. Okay guys, later. Bye.
